Linda Casbon

Linda Casbon said, "Three-dimensional objects are concrete and real, whereas the world of the painted image is illusory. The shadow of a tree moves and changes, it is ephemeral, but the tree that casts the shadow is physically present and real. I view the juxtaposition of these elements as the here and now (real) meeting up with the infinite and intangible. "

“You Wu Xiang Sheng” comes from the second chapter of the “Tao Te Ching”. It refers to the mutual transformation of Being and non-being. The meaning is to point out the unity of opposites between the two contradictory sides. “You Wu Xiang Sheng” represents wisdom in ancient Chinese philosophy. Linda's statement about trees and shade echoes the “You Wu Xiang Sheng”.

Linda Casbon

Visiting Assistant Professor, Pratt Institute

Adjunct Associate Professor, Hofstra University

She has participated in numerous artist residencies including the Bemis Foundation, the Archie Bray Foundation and the Kohler Arts in Industry Program. She is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and maintains an active studio practice.

Detail of Screen

Her work translates forms into a language of metaphoric associations. It hints at meanings without using literal descriptions. Objects are the visual sounds of this language. She views these pieces as words or emblems.

When placed together these words form a sentence, a poem, and a kind of narrative with its own internal logic. Pieces play off of each other unconsciously, forming a complete thought when displayed together.

—— Linda Casbon

裹 Wrap, 31x46x105cm , 2007

Linda’s work is generally large-scale hand-built sculpture. In her point of view, the boundary between two and three dimensions is an important aspect of the work. Ceramic forms are used as a sculptural canvas to draw on, creating interplay between painted shapes and actual shapes.

Linda's creative concept from the whole to the part inspires creators to look at the work from a new perspective; her work system from the individual to the whole triggers the audience to re-examine the relationship between the works.
